For
those who want to learn the basics of traditional boatbuilding
through hands-on experience but are not seeking a 2-year commitment,
we offer internships. Four, six, eight weeks and beyond, interns
build one flat-bottom skiff or another boat of their choice as
long as the project is approved by our instructors, and will work
through the details of constructing that design.

Interns
independently pursue their own project without direct supervision,
but participate in the 'Shop community and work alongside apprentices
and other interns.

Interns
who have the most successful internships are curious and self-motivated,
but are also willing to seek help and ask questions. During their
weeks here, Interns have the opportunity to learn about other
boat construction during Friday Walkaround (see description of
Walkaround in the Apprenticeship section) and Friday Activities
with apprentices and staff.
Independent Internships
Independent Internships are designed to be custom programs. They
can begin at any time during the year and can be any duration,
as long as the Intern's proposed project is appropriate for the
time allotted. Though the Independent Internship program is extremely
flexible, many participants do not arrive with a specific design
or project in mind. In this case we offer 6 and 8-week internships
in skiff construction and have developed a program around this
boat that will teach the basics of boatbuilding.
Cooperative Internships
Cooperative Internships allow students at academic institutions
to add an experiential component to their education. Depending
on the school and their specific requirements for field study,
we work directly with administrators and arrange for interns to
fit our program into their required curriculum. In addition to
boat work, Atlantic Challenge offers the opportunity to become
involved and learn about the management and philosophy of a community
driven non-profit organization.
