YOUTH
BOATBUILDING & SAILING PROGRAMS IN ROCKLAND
AND
MIDCOAST MAINE
In addition
to the programs we offer for our own students, we also run programs
for local schools and communities. Each year, we work with teachers,
councilors, administrators, and parents to fill the needs of students
who would not otherwise learn hands-on skills. If you are interested
in enrolling in one of these programs, or would like to contact
us about beginning your own, please don't hesitate to be in touch.
We are always interested to hear ideas, and we frequently work
with group leaders to design courses best suited to their students.

Half-Hull
Model Making
The Apprenticeshop periodically offers three-day workshops for
boys and girls ages 8-15 during school breaks. Students will have
the opportunity to learn the principles of boat design and tool
use while constructing their own half-hull models. Instructors
and volunteers are on hand to teach tool use and safety. These
are excellent courses for those with little to no previous woodworking
experience. Contact
us for more information and scheduling.
Marine
Mentoring
After-school
boatbuilding for 10-14 year olds. Students from the Rockland Middle
School (SAD #5), other schools in the area, and home-school programs
come to the 'Shop twice a week for 2 hours to learn the basics
of boatbuilding. Small boats help to create a connection by showing
young people that each step has a result. There really is no end
to the projects and lessons that children can learn through boatbuilding.
Students work alongside trained community volunteers, retired
boatbuilders, and Apprenticeshop staff thereby gaining the additional
benefit of positive adult relationships while building confidence,
competence, and greater self-esteem.
Through the process of design and set-up the students work together
and individually, honing their problem solving, critical thinking
and visualization skills, calling on practical math skills and
learning to work together as a team. Our programs offer such an
empowering tool-the boat- as a way to instill and increase self-confidence
in a person's ability to achieve something through working with
their hands.

Field
Trips
"Thank you for your time showing us the rope tying, wood working
shop, the rowing activity, and every little thing. We all wanted
to say thank you for a great time."
- Students and staff of the Warren Alternative School
We encourage schools to come and visit us for a morning or afternoon
throughout the year. We offer tours of the 'Shop with hands-on
activities, and during the summer season we take groups rowing
as well. Field trips to the 'Shop are a great way to spark interest
in craft and maritime history, and often lead to further participation
in our marine mentoring and other youth programs.
If you are interested in setting up a field trip, please call
us at 207-594-1800 or e-mail us at info@atlanticchallenge.com.
