Bio:
I paint fish, frogs, birds and insects connected to
form patterns that act like systems. These are made
by inserting natural specimens painted or draw from
field guides into configurations, sometimes seen through
a kaleidoscope. A line of fish wavers between a line
and fish. Connections of organic specimens usually make
a variety of objects or forms, like a unique organism,
although not organic as the forms do not exist naturally.
While humans are far removed from nature, we are also
very similar to it. I find these entwined oppositions
interesting. Many of the specimens I depict will never
be seen in their natural environment or alive, as they
are experienced unnaturally through field guides. At
the other end of the spectrum, the symmetry in much
of the work reflects the human body, as we reflect nature
and vice versa. When an organic structure is broken
down into smaller elements, we are all the same, such
as the double helix form of a strand of DNA. Similar
to spiders and bees, I weave patterns that are usually
structured around geometry, not unlike honeycomb or
spider webs.
