Bio:
Brian Krebs was born in 1975 and grew up in Ringwood,
New Jersey. He graduated from Drew University, studying
philosophy and mathematics, and moved to Maine shortly
afterward. He currently lives in Warren, is a self-taught
artist and has been painting for eleven years. Krebs
paints in oil, usually with only a palette knife over
well defined sketches buried under layers of color and
patterns in texture. His paintings have appeared in
various forums, exhibits and publications, mostly in
the midcoast area and have been described as imaginative
and elusive with an impressionist style. Limited Giclee
prints of some paintings are also available. For more

Artist's Statement:
When 44° Latitude came up I was
in the middle of a series of island paintings in which I
was experimenting with bold colors and lines and shapes
to create depth and movement. My original intention was
to isolate one plane, the sky, from one of these and elaborate
on it to see where it goes. As I was looking at this centerboard
I chose, I realized that it's the perfect shape for an idea
I had once but put aside because it was this odd, long shape.
The inspiration was photos I had taken at sea of the full
moon and clouds which I cut and cropped together. It seemed
to make so much sense. Plus the obvious maritime theme,
so I changed subjects but I kept going with this launguage
of shapes and color and lines (and the occasional drip or
run) that I had been exploring.
I enjoyed painting this. Once I started it took a direction
of its own which I had not envisioned. This is exactly what
I love about art. I'm very happy with how it turned out,
it holds my attention. There's a lot to see if you keep
looking at it.
The title is a play on double meanings: two words each with
alternate interpretations to describe light from moon directly
and indirectly through its reflection off the unstill sea.
The moon is a revolving body but it is not a source of light.
It also reflects it from the hidden sun, so there you have
it. "Revolutions & Reflections"
