Artist's Statement:
Creating a sculpture from old small wooden boat parts is not how I normally work. I use a formal vocabulary of shapes arranged in ordered configurations to create abstract geometric sculpture that is non-representational. So I was intrigued by the challenge of creating found-object sculpture. I have always been interested in the sculpture of the early part of the twentieth century—found-object and cubist by artists such as Picasso, Julio Gonzales, Jacques Lipchitz, and others of that time. Since I have built several small wooden boats and am familiar with the shapes involved and with wooden boat construction, I thought would use the parts available to create a figurative sculpture.
