Artist's Statement:
In 1999 I was part of a group show
at College of the Atlantic entitled Chart Art in which I
used old charts and postage stamps of boats and seabirds
to create small collages reflecting the Maine coast. For
44 Degrees Latitude I revisited this theme thinking that
Rockwell Kent’s illustration for Moby Dick reproduced
on a postage stamp was a fitting image for a show benefiting
Atlantic Challenge.
I consider postage stamps and old charts to be ‘found
objects’, but that is not entirely true as both seem
to flow towards me like flotsam on a tide: friends offer
me stamps knowing that I may use them in collages, and my
husband brings me his old charts from our wooden sailboat.
