Artist's Statement:
Designed as a piece of outdoor garden sculpture, SUNKEN GARDEN SCULPTURE is constructed primarily from the stern of a flat-bottom skiff with additions of buoys, ropes, and an oar. I am attracted to old things and antiques and am challenged by how parts of these objects can be recycled into new forms and if not functional at least they are artistic. Although my work as a professional artist takes the form of abstract landscape paintings I have made various assemblages of old things including tables and mirrors using found nautical objects and drifwood. It is difficult to junk or trash interesting shapes and designs be it natural or man-made. Four cast iron boiler units now stand as one sentinel as three iron sheep in our yard. In SUNKEN GARDEN SCULPTURE the boat stern with a rich patina of old paint should be an interesting focal point in a garden of plants and flowers...maybe even in a vegetable garden. Hopefully it is whimsical and fascinating to the eye and will excite the imagination with different light qualities and changing seasons, including winter snow. This is a characteristic or quality that I seek in my paintings as well.
** A sunken garden is not required...any garden or yard will be just fine...or an edge of woods!

Suggestions for installation and care:
The oar slips in two circles of rope with the handle down and the banners up. I would suggest that the interior of the boat face south. The sculpture should be placed on a bed or surface that drains easily. This bed could be sand, small beach stones, or crushed stone. A few selected larger rocks or stones could be added and several potted plants or planted flowers, small shrubs, or vegetables...maybe something that climbs...placed around the base. The work is not so precious that it cannot be changed or alterted and it will naturally change over the years. Paint will continue to chip and peel. It can be individualized by the owner! For example, different streamers could be changed for each season, or other related found objects added to the composition as well as favorite rocks and stones.
