Brief
Bio:
As a painter, my primary subjects are the color and
light of the landscape of Maine, as well as interior
life. I seek to capture a boldness in my work that reminds
one of the capacity of the environment and our experience,
to call one into an atmosphere of “cool awakening”.
By way of a painterly approach, luminous color, the
sheer patterning and lighting of objects, my goal is
to create a work that manifests the fondness and joy
I have for the world around me.
By way of influence, I have an admiration for many master
artists and their styles of work. In particular, I enjoy
the spirited use of color and shape by Henri Matisse,
Rockwell Kent, the Group of Seven (from Canada) and
Connie Hayes; the bold figural works of John Singer
Sargent and Edouard Manet; and the quiet, contemplative
works of Andrew Wyeth, and Alan Bray. They are all united
by their skillfulness, bold spirit, fondness for their
subjects and contemplation of the world around them.
These are the qualities that I wish to engender in my
work.
