Basic Sailing and Seamanship
This
is an introduction to sailing in a simple single-handed boat.
Knowledge and confidence are built through shore-side lessons
and sailing on the protected waters of Rockland Harbor. Topics
include sailing theory, boat handling, safety, right of way, knots,
and docking.
No
experience necessary.

Intermediates

Sailing theory learned in the basic sailing course is applied
in both small one person dinghies as well as the two person Vanguard
Club 420 which is used throughout the world in competitive high
school and college programs. New topics will include rigging,
sail trim, hiking straps, centerboard control, balance and teamwork.
Prerequisite:
Basic Sailing and Seamanship, equivalent experience, or instructor
permission.

Race Clinic
This course is an introduction to boat-handling and tactics for
small sailboat racing. Students will learn proper body mechanics,
body placement, roll tacking, jibing, and advanced boat-handling
skills. Racing theory will include racing rules, starting strategy,
and up and downwind tactics. Prerequisite: Intermediate
sailing, equivalent experience, or instructor permission.

Intro
to Keelboats
This
course will allow students to practice their sailing skills while
enjoying the comfort of a keelboat. Each class day will begin
with a brief classroom lesson introducing students to sailing
theory and nomenclature as applied to the larger keelboat. The
rest of each day will be spent on-the-water utilizing hands-on
teaching techniques. On-the-water topics will include safety,
sailing theory, boat handling, sail handling, right of way, docking
and more.
Prerequisite:
Intermediate sailing, equivalent experience, or instructor permission.

Instructor
Trainee Course
This
course is required for any sailor who would like to be considered
for an Instructor Trainee position this summer with Atlantic Challenge.
It is two full days of training with the staff prior to the regular
season. We will cover all aspects of the trainee's roles and responsibilities.
We will be learning how to interact as instructors, equipment
care, and get a fair amount of on the water time in boats. All
trainees must attend an Atlantic Challenge sailing course as a
student during the same season prior to working as a trainee.
Prerequisite:
15 years of age, past Atlantic Challenge participant, or instructor
permission.
